Thanks for your observant note, tpa.

I think combat boots with an otherwise formal getup would look very, very strange even on the funkiest guy. I always wear boots if I'm dressed up, but dressing up for me doesn't go any fancier than a vest and tie, and I'm covered in tattoos and have really long dreadlocks. I think a more traditional choice in footwear will look a lot better in this case.
Cheers!

Jack,
I realize that the timing might be tight but, once you have your new kilt in hand and full kit assembled, why don't you suit up (kind of a test run) and have your wife take a couple of shots and then post them here. That way, we will have a visual to evaluate and base last minute suggestions or recommendations on.
You description of your intended outfit seems sound but, keep in mind that wearing the PC means you will be pretty 'dressed up' so, I have to agree with the consensus of most here that boots would certainly distract from that.

Simon Fraser fought as MacShimidh, a Highland chief… wrapped and belted in a plaid over the top of his linen shirt, like his ordinary kinsmen. He put a bonnet on his head, and stuck the Fraser emblem, a sprig of yew, in it. With the battle cry, A'Chaisteal Dhunaidh and the scream of the pipes, they charged to battle. Going with your advice on the fly plaid. Among other things, it would make for a very busy lapel/shoulder area.
Thanks, Manu.

Boots are out!
...glad I asked.
Thanks, Rabblers. Will post pictures of intended ensemble.
No black socks, though (unless I'm missing something again). I'd like to look formal, but not uniformed.
Cheers,
Jack

Then maybe white instead of the colored socks. Just a thought since it is going to be more formal.

If the boots end up looking a bit much, try covering them with gaiters such a worn by the military and pipe band members.

I would always choose coloured hose over white socks.
White socks are not more formal.

Sorry IMHO that is even worse.....
Gaiters (what you are talking about are called spats) are not meant to cover boots.
They are meant to cover the shoe to keep muck from getting into the top of the shoe and going inside.
This is not worn with the PC., stick with plain black shoes if that is all you have, leave boots and spats to a non formal look.

Sorry about that. i was also thinking of Victorian era clerical (ecclesiastic) gaiters.
Thanks,
