Kilt Jacket Conversion

My jacket conversion went rather well, I closed the single vent in the back with intentions for adding double vents (never happened) I ultimately removed the pockets entirely (and I still fully intend to add the flaps back on in a proper location, along with some flap sculpting.) I have a thread here somewhere of that basic conversion... I got lucky with my thrift store tweed. It had a half lining, patch pockets, good button location and I liked the lapel size...

I have a question for all you DIYers out there. Are there any decent patterns available for kilt jackets? I have some very nice tweed in the wool section my fabric stash just wiating to be made into kilt jackets.

My Sincere Thanks to Everyone who replied, explained and referred me to other posts and pictures. These were very helpful!

I called our local Scottish/British food specialty shop and the owner recommended a local seamstress who has some experience with Kilts. I'm going to visit her next week with some notes and photos that you all supplied on this thread. We will see how it goes.......and what it costs?

Have your tailor make the jacket so the bottom is right about the crest of the hips and buttocks. The bottom of the jacket will now be about the same as the sleeves.

That's basically the top of the pleats, correct?

Preferably you want double vents in the back. A single vent can work but a double vent looks better with the kilt. The original jacket must have enough fabric in the back seams for them to be let out and raised. Most do not have any extra fabric.

If the original jacket has a single vent and doesn't have enough fabric in the back seams to convert to a double vent, is it better to leave the single vent, or sew it up so that the back lays flat?

This is a particularly good tip, MNlad. It does make the pockets look more natural.
