Regrets for you Father's passing. I too have lost many shipmates and that is why I wrote such a passionate reply. I still have issues, but work on them everyday. Your Dad was really a hero.

The reason why Vets don't talk about their experiences is we think no one will believe us. I am ex Royal Scots and I will only talk about it to guys I served with. Civvies would not understand.

I agree, but how can you really explain it? They either don't believe, only want to hear about the gore, are critical or judgmental of you, your actions, and do not care about ramifications of what it did to you, or in some cases will lecture you about your actions...so I don't even bother. I listen to the war heroes, the thank the Lord I am still here. I guess I feel much better around veterans than I do those who never served.

I understood it enough as an FMF Corpsman serving after Vietnam, taking care of Vietnam Vets, to know I never wanted to go to war. Thankfully I never did.
