Thanks; Yes I have my Grandfather's Service records. Unfortunately my Grandfathers uniform was destroyed in a fire many years ago. As for wearing a kilt not quite sure about that. I'm afraid my wife's eye's might burst into flames.

Ha, ha! My wife is only able to shoot daggers from her eyes (while I'm kilted around other women).

My grandfather was at Ypres, but I don't know enough to distinguish between, say, the 1st battle and the 2nd battle, etc. He was a conscript in the Royal Artillery, promoted to Sergeant in the field, and he was (ironically, I suppose) attached to the 16th Irish (not Canadian) division, although his particular unit of the Royal Artillery was mustered at West Ham, in East London. It is perhaps another irony that he was attached to an Irish unit, although my Irish heritage comes from my mother's side.
He lost all his teeth in action, having driven a horse-drawn tender of ammunition for the big guns into a barbed-wire fence. Still, he survived to live many years after the war.
At the same time, my other grandfather (the Irish one) was on Northern patrol in the British merchant navy. In the first war, the German U-Boats had a limit on how far North they could go, so cargo was shipped through the far North to avoid the subs. It worked, but the cold was hell on the sailors.

Ypres was the first place my Grandfather was sent to on the Western Front. He joined the 16th ( Canadian Scottish ) on 6-16-1916. He spent 2 months there before the Battalion marched south to The Somme killing grounds. Oh yes he wasn't Scottish just assigned to a Highland unit. He survived the war (wounded 4 times) and lived until he was ninety. Much respect for your relatives service. Deas Gu Cath
