    Trying to make a kilt.

Hi, I'm John from Scotland. I've decided to make my own kilt after a few hired ones.
It's going to be an adventure, but hopefully fun along the way. Got The Art of Kiltmaking coming soon, thanks Babs, fabric arrives in a couple of days. Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    John

Well met John. As you proceed with the kilt, and questions arise for you, let us know. There are many here that have tread the path you are on now. Welcome and good luck with the kilt build.

Hi John; welcome to X Marks. Making your own kilt is an ambitious project so I wish you the best with this project and look forward to seeing the results of your effort. You have certainly found the best place here at XMTS for information and advice.

Simon Fraser fought as MacShimidh, a Highland chief… wrapped and belted in a plaid over the top of his linen shirt, like his ordinary kinsmen. He put a bonnet on his head, and stuck the Fraser emblem, a sprig of yew, in it. With the battle cry, A'Chaisteal Dhunaidh and the scream of the pipes, they charged to battle. Welcome, from Inverness-shire. Looking forward to seeing THE kilt on parade in the High Street before long.

I've done it twice, both practice with just solid color fabrics. You can get enough to practice at a pretty reasonable price. Take your time, pin a lot, measure even more and have fun!

Just finished my first hand stitched one, came out really nice, to the casual observer its spot on, to people on here there are obvious defects. Don't let those issues get to you, most are fixable with extra effort and you know what to watch for next time. YouTube is a great help, actually watching people doing the exact stitch you're trying to figure out is great. Just don't be so serious that it stops being fun and welcome to the forum.
