    Luke,

You may be right. I'll look in detail tomorrow, including inside.

You perhaps could take a look at are the officers' sporrans of The London Scottish.

One of those beehive-like knobs is on Ebay now, very cheap.

Having looked at both inside and oout I cannot see anythign that definitely supports the inclusion of bars on the back of this cantle. If there were then that wold suggest to me that the cantle must have been even older than the bag and strap.

figheadair, I would agree that there's no way of knowing for sure whether those holes were for bars. But I can't imagine what else they would be for, considering that those bars are so ubiquitous on metal cantles as shown below. That being the heaviest part of the sporran, as well as the most structural element, it is the natural place to mount the support points. Without evidence to the contrary, and considering that your strap hanger was not original to the bag, I would be at least 90% certain that your cantle previously had bars. From the looks of the remaining metal in the lower holes, it appears that the original bars probably corroded and were broken off.

My standard answer here would be to email Lamar (Ferguson Britt sporrans), but I believe he may still be in Japan. I'll check.

Richard, I can't find that knob on eBay. I have very poor results when searching for sporran stuff there are so many ways to enter possible search terms. If it hasn't sold yet could you PM me with a way to find it?

I do appreciate the above pictures. They give me good ideas about making my own
sporran . Is the leather cantle on the pics moulded around a metal base?

Yes that's what it looks like, doesn't it? I would love to have one of those sporrans in my hands to I can see exactly how it's made.
