New project coming in the mail...first tartain kilt build...
I scored four yards of double Royal width Stewart from GK yesterday....15 bucks a yard for 12 oz....not going to argue with that...although I would prefer 16...
This will be the first kilt I willhave made in tartan, although the last one (which, sadly, was ruined in a party accident) anyway...it was a simple.plaid suiting and made a neat kilt,
but all the rest have been camo prints or plan cloth utility kilts.
I am looking forward to the challenge of making a 'real' kilt, and am already noodling through the possibilities of how I want it pleated amd how much yardage will go into it.
Realistically my narrow frame will probably only eat up about six yards...and I doubt stuffing all eight into a kilt made of fabric that light will bring good results...
Of course....If I am going to have a proper kilt....nowwww....I need everything else..uh oh.

If it is your goal to make a "proper" kilt as you say, may I suggest that you contact Barb T. Her book "The Art of Kiltmaking" is the definitive work on the traditional way to make a kilt as taught at Gordon & Sons.
The link to the book can be found by clicking Barbs logo on the right banner of our advertisers.
Alternately you can go direct to the book. - http://www.celticdragonpress.com/
This is not some publishing house but actually Barb.

I have it...I started out years ago with the X-kilt and then adapted many techniques from Barb T. into the kilts I was making, I have just never had good wool tartan to work with, Now I want to get back into it, and I have forgotten many of the nuances of construction.
My project in the morning is to dig through boxes and find that book and a bolt of windowpane I have stashed for a great kilt costuming project I have in mind...
