We have Kimonos in our house as well. No ties to Japan, other than our daughter has an affinity. We stress appreciation over appropriation, so the Amazon kimono tat is OUT. I've managed to learn and hunt down some authentic gear, one complete kimono, and another about half complete.
All that to say, I can't help but think that a tartan Obi would be a better look, and presentation of tartan, in my opinion.

The lass is pretty creative. One wonders what she could do with some real wool tartan.

I have seen some people wear a tartan obi (Japanese belt) with a kimono and a few kimonos made with a checkered weave pattern, yet this one has an original look.

    Good for her!!

As an exchange student in Japan, many years ago, I learned to make a kimono. But not with tartan.

Not long ago, I was asked to make a pair of hakama in the authentic MacLaren Modern tartan. I thought it would be easy, but it was trickier than I thought.

Ah, I would think a tartan hakama would be a good look as well!

This is not so unique. This picture was taken in 2008 at the Worldwide Gathering of Clan MacIntyre. She indicated to me that her kimono was the Hunting McIntyre. It wasn't, but some other commercial textile sold as MacIntyre. Regardless,....
