It is beautiful, and I wish I could take credit for more than just good eBay timing.
If I were more habitual about my kilt wearing, I may have used it by this point. I am, after all, historically a metal-head, and then an American of Scottish ancestry - possibly the more flamboyant of our breed.
If I do use it, I will take care with the tiny chain links - their square shape equates to hundreds of tiny wool pullers! I placed the thing on the floor to prep the photo and half the carpet came with it when I picked it up!

What I wonder about is when chain straps appeared.

In a quick flip-through of The Highlanders Of Scotland I only see two chain-straps, the rest of the men wearing plain leather straps.

In any case chain-straps had become more or less standard in civilian Highland Dress by the 1920s.

The army usually has retained plain leather straps (black, brown, or white) but in some regiments Officers (and certain senior Sergeants) wore chain straps with their leather sporrans.

Here's an Officer of The Gordon Highlanders wearing a chain strap.
