Hey there! I found this site while doing research on buying a kilt. Boy, who knew there were so many choices and types!?! Not me - until now. Anyway, I've agreed to participate in a 5K run in April in the next town north from me, Dunedin, FL. Dunedin is a heavily Scot-influenced town complete with Highlander Games (in April), a multitude of pipe bands, etc. I've lived down here since 1998 and have become acclimated to seeing folks in kilts around town - not super common but no one seems to be surprised by the odd kilt here and there. Well, since I've agreed to the the run (probably will be a walk for me) I figure I'll do it right and go in a kilt. Actually, I've thought about getting one for a while - they seem very comfortable especially during hot weather (i.e. 10 months a year). It'll be perfect for the occasional Dunedin pub crawl (eight brewpubs and counting), too. Plus, with my dad coming from England I figure I've got plausible reason to wear a kilt. Apparently my last name hails from Wales.

Any advice on buying a kilt is welcome - I'm definitely in the casual kilt rung. Thanks much and cheers!!

    Hello and welcome from Alabama!
I remember talking about the games there on this forum, and how the name Dunedin is a direct derivation of the Gaelic for 'Edinburgh',

    Welcome aboard.

A few words of advice for running in a kilt:

    1. Leave the sporran at home or at least in the car, you can always wear it after the run, (jog around the block wearing the sporran and you'll quickly understand why)
    2. Wear compression shorts under the kilt, (see parenthesis comment above)
    3. Enjoy the run, reasons to follow:
    1. The exercise
    2. The after race party (Beer)
    3. The scenery you'll see running the course with you

Check out USA Kilts Semi-Traditional, or Casual Kilts in Poly-Viscose for something to run in, it can be washed in a washing machine, great for a kilt worn on a pub crawl, (though I hand wash mine). Being in Central Florida you'll appreciate the lighter weight of the Poly-Viscose material, since you rarely will see freezing or below temperatures.

    good luck with the 5K

Enjoy your run in the kilt. Last year I did 2 runs kilted and for one we had a "team" of 6 in kilts.
A kilt would not be a good choice if you were competitive, but it will enhance the experience. Expect compliments.

Welcome from a Scotsman living in the English midlands. All the best for the run, though it's a few months away yet!
