Hi from Coventry
I do not have particularly strong claims to Scottish heritage, however my grandmother was proud of her family origins and I recently had a kilt made for me in Elliot modern tartan, and have worn it with a Crail jacket to a recent sociology conference where I have to say the outfit drew much admiration.
I have made my own sporran, and I have a dirk, sgian dubh, and a sgian brew (for safety) with handles and sheaths made by myself. I have since got myself a hand tailored Inverness cape as well.
My next outing in public will be to the House of Lords for an official reception, where I expect I shall have pictures to post.
I also wore a casual kilt to an internation conference in Edinburgh, where visitors were keen to have their picture taken standing next to me.
No doubt about it, the kilt is a fine garment.

Welcome, hope you have a great day out at the House of Lords. Don't worry too much about heritage, wearing the kilt well is far more important to some of us. I'm a lowland Scot and late comer to the party, I have learned so much from this forum in the last year, I hope you find it as useful.
