Hmmm...you would think jacobite shirts WERE historically accurate, since they are all over the place when you search for kilt and kilt wear. So jacobite is totally off the table!

    Thank you for the feedback.

I like linen shirts, but one question (or 12) when you say loose, do you mean button down or pullover?
Please bear with me! I am trying to get him to be comfortable without looking like a fool, and wouldn't want to insult any of our many Scottish friends/guests.

Prince Charlie is totally out of the question, because of the heat, and it is overdressed for our type of do.

You would think traditional dress would be easier than it actually is.

On another note, is there a rhyme or reason to combining hose with the tartan? I have seen light red argyle hose with dark red kilts, and all kinds of crazy combinations.
I have been reading the forum, and matchy-matchy seems to be "out", but if something absolutely clashes, isn't that just as bad? I personally do not like white hose, I would much prefer he wore grey or any color that matches the kilt we have ordered, but I am not sure about argyle. In all honesty, I don't like argyle for any occasion...
I have attached a pic of the kilt, it is as close to the one we were looking for as we were ever going to find without spending money we don't have on the real thing. We will eventually get 'the real thing' but not just yet.
    Thanks again!!

Have you considered the Galicia Tartan? I haven't been able to find anything tied to Ely.

The Ely tartan is the one I have put down in the photo. Unfortunately, my son (he will be giving me away) doesn't have the excitement and interest in family history, and having been brought up by a very manly-man Spanish father, refuses to wear a "skirt"... besides, even if I could convince him, Ely tartan being light blue and pink, would deffo put it in the bin!!

The Galician tartan is beautiful (blue is both mine and my fiancee's favorite color) but it has no connection to us. It would be like being from Wyoming and wearing a Florida tartan.

At least it's in the same country. Where did you find it? I looked on the tartan registry and couldn't find Ely. I like blue a lot, purple too. I have a Heritage of Scotland tartan kilt and I get complements on the color, even if it is a cheap kilt.

I just googled Ely tartan and it came up. The tartan is called Cian of Ely.

I could be wrong, but it's clan cian of ely. I've seen that, but dismissed it because it seems as though it's not really the clan Ely, but Cian of Ely. What I did find was that there were Ely's that lived in an area around Fife, in Scotland. https://www.ancestry.co.uk/name-origin?surname=Ely

    Click on the scotland link.

Not many there. As I said, at least in my case, they went to England.

Hmmm...I found some info in the link below. Ely is the place, and Cian is the clan. I am thinking that somewhere in or around the 1600s, the clan may have split into those keeping Cian of Ely those favoring Ely. Just an assumption, as Scottish geneology is totally new to me. But, in defense of my apparent ignorance, 1, I just found out about this heritage last month, and 2, Cian is a color, and I just assumed the tartan was named 'Blue of Ely'...
...and yes, I know what happens when I assume...

Back to the shirt question. If you want to wear a historic themed shirt and want it to be historically correct I would suggest either doing the research and making it yourself or find a reputable reenacting source and purchasing one. I have several linen and linen/cotton blend historically correct shirts from various eras, from 16th century to 19th century, that I wear, along with doublets, jerkins and waistcoats to compliment and enhance.
