    Glasgow Celtic Society Uniform

I recently had an opportunity to examine this c1880 uniform of the Glasgow Celtic Society.

This is the only surviving outfit of the organisation I’m aware of. It is typical of the mid-Victorian dress type Highland costume, kilt, jacket and various accoutrements. The kilt was my principal item of interest, not only because of the fact that it allowed me to confirm the correct setting of the rare and no longer see asymmetric tartan but because of the construction and decoration.

The material is a soft Saxony weave of the type often seen in these type of dress Victorian kilts and plaids but what was really surprising was the fact that the kilt is box-pleats, something I’ve never seen in others made of this lighter weight and soft cloth. The tartan itself was designed for the Society and fell out of use with their demise. The silk ribbons on the other hand are MacKenzie, presumably because that tartan is broadly similar and follows the tradition of having ribbons of a different tartan to that of the kilt.
