    Advice from Scotland please

Heading across the Atlantic soon. We’re hitting Glasgow the Orkney Islands, specifically Kirkwall, Inverness and then Edinburgh. Can anyone recommend pubs or restaurants that aren’t touristy. Places where a Yank can get something authentic and not found in states.

One small thing that totally surprised me when I found out was that the national dish appears to be Chicken Tikka Masala. It seemed that every pub or restaurant I went into had it on the menu and that this one dish is ordered more often than anything else.

In 2001, Member of Parliament for Edinburgh, Minister Robin Cook claimed that Chicken Tikka Masala was "The true British national dish".

There are even some that claim that it was invented in Glasgow.

I've not been to Scotland yet, but I've had good luck finding great local pubs by just venturing out of the tourist areas.

I tend to do that everywhere. You know the rule in Georgia. The way to find the best BBQ joint in a small Georgia town is to look for the ambulances, Sheriff's patrol cars and local tow trucks in the parking lot. I've found the best Caribbean food
walking a few extra blocks on Antigua and Saint Thomas.

I'm hoping to find out ahead of time what the locals recommend before wandering too far in Scotland.

Excuse me Mr. Ashton, but, didn't the Scots invent everything?

    maybe so, except.......

It maybe so that the Scots invented everything, but I've been told it was the Irish who invented the wheel barrow..............for the express purpose to teach the Scots to stand on their hind legs !!!!! EEEEWWwww ....sorry about that but it's what I was told by my grandfather a very long time ago. heh! heh!

So now pubs in Edinburgh is something I know a wee bit about. There is a plethora of them but here are a few highlights:

Guilford Arms - at the Waverley station end of Prince's Street behind the Apple Store. A classic boozer - lots of brass, mirrors, wood, and a ceiling that is worth the visit itself

Cafe Royal - beside the Guilford. A beautiful pub - tile adorned and stain glass windows.

Halfway House - halfway between the train station and Rose Street. Great beers and always has a pot of Cullen Skink on the go.

The Jolly Judge - down a close off the Royal Mile. Great hidden gem.

The Bow Bar - Another classic bar with a fantastic selection of beers and whiskies. I have spent may an afternoon working my way through their many beers. I've met movie stars, politician, writers, poets, binmen, rogues, and everything in between.

The Royal Oak - always has some folk music on

Sandy Bells - even more folk music

Hanging Bat - very popular with the craft beer fans. Adam is the manager. Let him know Graeme the Brewer sent you and he'll treat you right.

Anyway that's just a couple off the top of my head. There are plenty of awesome boozers in town.
