Fraser of Struy's Plaid - Reweave

I'm just about to organise a short run reconstruction of the tartan from Thomas Fraser of Struy's plaid complete with herringbone selvedge. It will be a large sett of around 13 inches per the original material but I think it will look outstanding pleated to alternating pivots.

In response to a couple of PMs. The cloth will be Elliots 16oz weight matched as closely as possible to the original shades and setting. Although the original piece doesn't have a herringbone selvedge the setting is perfect for a traditional blue selvedge mark. Here's a reconstruction of the origianl width of the cloth with a styalised HB selvedge.

The original cloth is 24 inches wide but as the reconstruction will be wider I will need to add another half sett, more or less, to fit Robin's stardard 30" width. I'll try to ensure that the non-HB selvedge finishes on a pivot meaning that the cloth could be joined to make a traditional plaid should anyone wish too.

As I start to get into the detail of this project a very interesting anomaly in the setting of the original cloth has shown up. The warp appears to be balanced, i.e. repeats equally out from the centre, but closer examination of this photo reveals that the setting at the left-hand selvedge (as viewed) omits the fine blue and red lines.

The resulting setting appears to be like this.

I've recently tracked down a much larger portion of the plaid which I need to examine in order to confirm the full setting. This new specimen will allow an accurate reconstruction and should answer a number of other questions; not least, who owned the various pieces before they were donated.

I've rewoked the threadcount so that it will fit double width cloth with an approx 12" sett and a herringbone selvedge mark on both sides. This will have the benefit of bring the cost down.

Thank you so much for this, Peter. This is so exciting that we are nearly at the final stages of making this. I was so happy to read your work on this amazing tartan and it is so great discovering these small details now! I really feel proud that we are finally making this tartan as close as we can to how it was done originally. It has been a wonderful experience to work with you on this.

    Highest regards,
    Adam

After a bit of toing and froing I've arrived at some shades that are a pretty god match for the original ones. They will look good woven up together.

A quick update. Now that the Trades' Holiday is over things are moving forward. The calculations are done, yarn shades selected, warping next week and hopefully on the loom by the end of the week. Here's the herringbone selvedge layout.

    Hi Peter,

Just wondering what the status of this re-weave is. I would like to get in on this.

Jerry, we"ve been waiting for some yarns to be dyed. I finalised the layout today and expect it to be on the loom shortly.
