    Hook and eye

What is hook and eye? Is it a closure used on kilts? Any idea what tartan is in the attachment?

Hook and eye is a generic name for what we usually call Velcro (this is a specific trade name). It's also called hook and loop.

*edited to add: hook and eye can also describe a metal clasp-type closure like you see on jackets, usually at the neck or very bottom. I've not seen it on modern kilts, but I suppose it's possible.

There are many types of hook and eye closures.

There are those you may find on a garden gate.

There are the style used on clothing.

As has been mentioned the smaller ones can sometimes be found on necklines. The larger ones with the bar above can sometimes be found on trouser waistbands.
I know of at least one 'traditional' kiltmaker who uses hooks and eyes for the left under apron attachment.

I am sorry but I do not know what Tartan is in the kilt you show. It appears to be one of the Pakistani made garments as there appears to be a join in the fabric that is very evedent and there is no internal construction to it at all. The Tartan is asymmetrical and I assume it is a fashion design.

Hook and loop is the generic name for Velcro. Some casual kilts use it.

Could that be what you’re thinking of?

Ah, Tobus beat me to it.
