School (University) tie

I wanted to share my university (San Diego State) tie.

The logo is SD with a spear through it since our mascot is the Aztec warrior.

I've had it for about a year but this is the first shirt I think it really works well with as it is a very bright red. It's a red and light blue tattersall (the check may be smaller than true tattersall but that's what macys calls it).

However, our mascot is the Eagle Warrior, while our nickname is The Aztecs. There was a big hullabaloo a decade or so back that made them change the name of the mascot from the Aztec Warrior to the Eagle Warrior after it was changed to the former from Monty Montezuma.

My alma mater, Texas A&M University, doesn't have an official tie stripe pattern. There are various ties on the market in our school colours of maroon and white, and with varying patterns of the official sanctioned logo. These are the two university ties I have:




In Texas, however, the A&M class ring is the more universally recognised symbol for alumni rather than a necktie. Anybody can wear maroon and white if they're a sports fan (it's a huge market with collegiate logos for sports, which dilutes the social standing of a university tie), but the mark of a graduate is the ring. It carries a lot of weight, especially in the engineering industry. On two separate occasions I have been pulled over by police officers for traffic violations, only to be let off with a "have a nice day" when they saw my A&M ring. I don't know why that happens, but I can't complain.

(I know it's off-topic of ties, but my ring gets worn every day.)

Tobus, your point about the popularity of school-color apparel among sports fans is a good one. As a fellow Southerner, I know that many of the most die-hard fans did not attend the school in question, but follow the team due to other factors, such as living in the area or the school having a particularly strong team or coach. On game days, the whole town will be draped in school colors and logos.

This goes a long way towards explaining why "the old school tie," which is such an institution in the UK, is almost unknown in the US. The tendency to keep changing designs and using sports logos rather than a consistent pattern of stripes or shields also means there are too many options for any one to become iconic or recognizable as a symbol the way British regimental and school ties do.
