The Underhose...
These guys (SB) make pretty darned good (no sock pun intended) compression socks. Pretty Wife was quite amused when she sourced some for me in argyle patterns -- I'm wearing the grey as I type this. While I scarcely think they'd make acceptable substitutes for diced hose, when worn beneath they're remarkably handy for helping to hold up knitted hose (not to mention helping to prevent deep vein thrombosis, edema, diabetic sores, etc.).
As a side bonus to those of us with perpetually lean shanks, they bulk up one's kilt hose slightly, but noticeably. Far easier than 1,000 calf raises at the gym. ;)

I like the blue offered by SB as well as the grey. There would be less of a color clash with my varicose veins. Odd how my blue veins show only at the top of my hose.

<snork> I've noticed that on my own legs. Pretty Wife calls that shade"Blue, By You."
The 'lectric blue of my socks (I have two pr. each of grey and blue; it's a veritable Civil War of hosiery) makes a fine distraction from creeping varicosity. For extra style points, wear 'em to the gym!*
*maybe not with a kilt, or your bench press invitation may be rescinded.

At times Sock Dreams has offered the cotton compression socks in bigger sizes. I have a pair in brown argyle that are very comfortable on my size 10.5 feet.
Sadly, Sock Dreams does not always restock (re-sock?) their bigger-size offerings as regularly as I would like.
I also have pair of compression socks from Fittest Pro that are comfortable, but quite ugly. So I've never worn them with a kilt or shorts, or anything that lets them show.

The plain black compression socks available from the Scottish National Health Service are sufficiently thick to be worn on their own.
Currently I qualify to get mine for free as I am recovering from a recent deep vein thrombosis.

I'm very pleased to read the word recovering. Some didn't get that far, and I'm happy you did. Prayers for continued healing.
