Edge of Normal Workshop sgian dubh

Howdy good folks, I'm curious if anyone has gotten a sgian dubh from Edge of Normal Workshop based out of Bloomington, Illinois? They make some fine looking sgian dubhs at a great price but they only have one review on Etsy.

I'd love to get an opinion before I send them some money, if anyone has one, of course.

First I’ve heard of them. The top row looks really great! The thing is - the price. In the ‘kit’ game, usually get what you pay for. I would also attempt to gather info before a purchase.

I tend to agree, but was hoping this was someone just trying to get their name out there and wasn't charging a lot.

I’d inquire about the type of steel used in these sgians. Given the price point, I’m thinking they may be cheap stainless or “Damascus” blades from India or Pakistan.

That’s not to say you can’t find a nice sgian that doesn’t cost a fortune, but you want to know something about the person with whom you’re dealing, and quality of their work.

I’d suggest you keep an eye out for work from the seller “Taygrd” on eBay, or checkout his Facebook page (https://m.facebook.com/TaylorKnives/) or website (https://sites.google.com/site/taylorknives/home).

Nathan is/was a member of this forum who makes proper, working blades at very reasonable prices. I’ve purchased three from him over the years, one of which can be seen here: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...-taygrd-87210/

Good luck to you in your search and let us know how it turns out!

First...they are not likely to be forging stainless steel blades...

Second...you are going to pay a lot more than $65 for a well-made Damascus blade and the Indian, Pakistani "Damascus" blades, really aren't.

I have a small supply of Indian blades both carbon steel and what they call "Damascus." They are OK but their quality is not the same as a handmade blade - of course - and they are generally smaller. I would follow the advice the others have given and continue looking for a better option.

One other thing then I will quit picking on them. I cannot tell anything about their quality from the low resolution photo on the site.

I think you’ll be very pleased... I thought of you when I saw the three sgians he’d listed on eBay.

    Looking forward to your review.
