Fly... Correct way to put it on, as so many do not appear wearing this correctly

I have a fly that I think I have worn correctly in the pas, but want to makes sure I am wearing it correctly for this upcoming event. You-Tube, watched several videos, but I am not convinced on they way it is worn. When you put the broach on do you go through the fly and your jacket? Wouldn't the pulling elongate the pin holes, stretching out the jacket and fly material, making a visible pin hole.

Are there any restrictions or concerns about the broach pin itself, when going to a formal affair? Anything that would be considered incorrect or casual?

The reason I ask, I have a formal tartan ball in a few weeks to attend, and I want to wear a fly, as most are wearing them. In doing so, I want to make sure it is worn correctly.

Any advise is appreciated. I hate to be incorrect or not wearing attire correctly, I just want to make sure about the traditions and proper wearing of the accessories.

Also, at a Military Ball, white cotton gloves worn by men are normal, at a formal tartan ball, are white gloves worn by men normal or not?

This is our first formal Tartan Ball, been to many Burn's Night Out, but being held in the Willard Hotel, Washington DC, I am sure there are protocols and proper clothing standards that apply, well I would hope there are, but in today's world of casual dress all the time, seems like formal is a lousily used world, with a much more slack definition that what I remember. Working in Embassies overseas, formal meant formal, but in the civilian world, I am sure it is much different. Just would like some advise from those who have attended these affairs in the past.

    Thank you,

Fly plaids are an unusual accoutrement, but if most are wearing them... well, when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

I would never pin it through to the jacket for the exact reasons you state. I would use a good solid brooch to weigh down the front, and use solid safety pins at the shoulder, under the epaulettes and invisible as pinned from the bottom up.

White gloves are tiny. Stick them in a pocket and if the majority are wearing them, then pull them out and put them on. As Padre to the Legion, my white gloves are always in my uniform jacket pockets along with a few poppies to use as required.

Thank you, love the idea of pinning under the epaulets, and using a heavy broach to counter balance. I will just put my gloves in my Sporran, they are thin cotton. I will post photos after the event.

Gloves are tricky business but I have a few rules I follow. I keep a pair of whites in my jacket (inner lining pocket) just in case.
Wear gloves if, during a black or white tie function:
you are an official usher for an event or serving any refreshments (food or drink as a host member, not a contracted server).
you are receiving or presenting an award.
you are a dignitary for the function (including honored guest).
you are presenting or attending a flag (Honor guard).
you are an escort to an elder (assisting my wife's grandmother for instance).

I am mindful that I don't have to keep my gloves on during the entire event. Removal is a matter of timing as the event changes mood from formal to business then to festive.

I hope this helps and you have a wonderful time. I await the photos.
