It was an appropriate day to visit the local war memorial and a pleasing surprise to find a tribute, in which I understand he played a part, from the kids at my grandson's local primary school there.
 
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

On this 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, I made a point of memorializing it in our church service. I was thinking very much of the WWI veteran I knew as a child, my grandfather, Lt. Daniel MacGregor Williams. He was a combat engineer officer in the Old Hickory Brigade of the National Guard. They were the first US unit to arrive in Europe and the last to leave for home. He pasted away in 1975 while I was in boot camp. I have many, strong, happy memories of him from my childhood and he is much missed by both my brother and me. We have the letter from the king of England to the officers of his unit, each of them got one, welcoming them into the war and thinking them for their service. He never discussed his time there, though we do have some very nice photos of him while he was there.
So thank you, all of you who still remember the importance of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
