Beard Grooming

I've been essentially hands-off on my beard (and hair) for 3 years now. The hair is pretty much fine but the beard definitely isn't. It's more than a bit scraggly and really needs some grooming. I do like having a long beard and I am very interested in continuing to grow it. But I also understand the need to maintain it. Does anyone have any tips on how to keep long beards looking nice without severely shortening them? Thanks!

I haven't seen my bare in chin in over 20 years, but it was only the past 3-4 years that I've grown it out longer than an inch or two. About a year ago, after trying a few random brands of beard oils, I've settled on and been using a beard wash and oils from Mad Viking Beard Company and I very much like them. The beard wash is designed not just to act as shampoo, but also to condition the skin below. The oils help keep the hair looking smooth and healthy as well as conditioning the skin. I have a jar of their beard balm that I've only used twice (Burns Supper and some other event where I was wearing a Saxon suit) to help keep the sides smoothed down and not looking so bushy.

Use a beard oil, brush a couple of times a day with a wooden comb, trim regularly with a good pair of clippers to keep it tidy/ avoid split ends, shampoo or wash with beard soap.

I remember the last beard-mustache conversation we had here. I found this (see photo) pet grooming tool at the Dollar General Store for $10.00. I use it on my mustache when I need something finer than snips to shape facial hair. My son-in-law uses the same tool to fine trim his beard. The cheaper price lets us replace the tool easily (I still have my original two years later). I can attest to its durability.

I think there are other brands and I can't recommend this brand over another nor do I get royalties for posting this product. It is sitting next to my laptop mouse for a size comparison.
