    McCausland Wear Buchanan Brooch?

My late Grandma was McCausland and from everything I have read they were a sept of Buchanan and wore their tartan. I can find a McCausland crest but no brooch for a fly plaid, so would a McCausland wear a Buchanan brooch like this one with a fly plaid:

It's pretty important because I want to get a tatto of the family fly plaid and brooch to honor her memory.

    Thanks!

Is there any record in your family where your Gran's family were from within Scotland?

The reason that I ask is that it is quite common for people to assume, due to the information out there, that all Scots and those of Scot ancestry, are a member of a Clan or have a Clan affiliation.

The Clan system was only in the Highlands, or the NW part of Scotland. The vast majority of the population were not from the Highlands and were not part of the Clan system.

So we ask people if they can trace their family back to a location within Scotland not just the name that they carry.

Thanks Steve, that's quite helpful. I know they immigrated to Canada and traveled west over some time before heading south into California. I'll do some more digging there!

My thinking is do what you feel will best honour the memory of your Grandma. It may well be that our links, or knowledge passed down has got a little hazy along the way, but if our intention is sound that is a great starting point.

I have two kilts in a Scott clan tartan - and wearing them feels right as I know my father’s family came from Scotland.

I wear a Clan Gordon tartan kilt to link to my grandmother. That feels good too.

My very best wishes on your quest.
