incorrect "military spec" kilt
Just saw this on Ebay, said to be a "military spec" Black Watch kilt.
It is not.
Just a heads-up in case anyone was looking for an accurate military kilt, this isn't it.

Actually it appears to be Black Watch (smallest sett) according to the Scottish Register of Tartans. But I'm not always right.

Hmm. It may be an obscure Black Watch variant, but it is not the Black Watch tartan used in military kilts that they claim to be reproducing.

WPG is getting out of offering these Pakistani made kilts, fortunately in this case.

It's not the size of the sett (which by the way is too small for an MOD Black Watch kilt) but the sett itself.
Black Watch has a distinctive "double track" motif that the WPG kilt's tartan lacks.

Here's Black Watch, you can see the "double track" motif: the pairs of black lines in the blue alternating between a single pair in the centre of the blue area, and being two pairs at the edges of the blue area:
The tartan of that WPG kilt lacks this feature, with every blue area having the single pair of black lines in the centre.

The information for all three entries is suspect and should be treated with caution. I'm not convinced Wilsons wove this but they well could have done. It's certainly not their 'Smallest 42nd', that was exactly what it sounds like, the standard 42nd tartan in a small setting.
The Clans Originaux collection (1880) includes a specimen of this named Black Watch
Quite by chance the STA had an enquiry this week from an ex-member of the NYPD asking about the use of this sett to line their winter Reefer Jackets. The tradition is that they were granted permission to use it by Queen Victoria, something I doubt.
