Wild and Majestic Exhibition

The NMS’s Wild and Majestic Exhibition opens on Wednesday. It has some fantastic pieces that have not been shown before and is well worth a visit.

The exhibition including this fantastic silver plaid brooch set with a cairngorm in the centre and a ring of sixteen carbuncles round it. It was worn by the chiefs of Clanranald in mid-19th century. Photo: NMS

Regretably, I'll not be able to fly over to view this exhibition. From the photo samples provided on the museum's website, I saw a few notable examples, such as the superb brooch illustrated by Peter, but I was especially taken by the magnificent 1822 Macgregor broadsword with its artistic silver basket hilt and cairngorm pommel. From what I could see of the blade, it appears that the Macgregor chief used an old blade from the 17th or 18th century for his sword. Perhaps an Xmarker with more expertise and who attends the exhibit could provide information on that.

Gerry, that's my understanding of the construction. I'll see what information there is at the event.

Thanks again, Peter. If the blade was said to be formerly part of a sword carried at Culloden, that answers my question. Your information is much appreciated.

What a superb exhibition and one I thoroughly recommend to anyone if you are able to see it between now and Nov.

Sounds like a wonderful exhibit. Too bad I'm halfway around the world!

That set of pipes, with the carved thistle-shaped drone ends, looks very familiar.

I believe that I saw it at the Black Gate Museum in Newcastle in the 1980s, which housed the well-known Cocks collection.

So the famous painting of the battle of Culloden will be on display? I can't remember if I've seen it in person.

BTW the music played in the latter half of that video is an Irish tune called Morrison's Jig. There are hundreds of fine Scottish jigs they could have used.

Gerry, no, Morier's Episode from the Scotch Rebellion is not included, the exhibition is the Aftermarth of Culloden to the mid-Victorian era. Pleanty more to see though.
