To go with a polo or button down shirt, i go with either a pair of wing tips (brogues) or a pair of 1461 Doc Martens, depending on how much i am going to be walking or standing. If i am adding in a jacket, definitely the wing tips. I typically only wear a pair of sneakers on the weekend when going out casually to to bar or dinner.

DM does offer a pair of brogues https://www.drmartens.com/us/en/p/24340001.

Cole-Haan makes really comfortable modern "wing tips" with running-shoe technology in the soles.

They look sharp and are good for all-day wear. As you can see from this photo from the Flagstaff highland games, the soles really aren't noticeable -- thought you'll see on the website that the same line includes much more colorful options.

I tend to wear a pair of Johnston & Murphy lug sole wingtips when kilted. A few coats of Red Wing boot oil darkened mine to a nice chocolate brown, but here's what they looked like new:

I also have a couple of pair of Clark's Montacute Lord boots (in dark tan and charcoal) and a pair of Clark's Montacute Wing shoes which are also comfortable. I'm not sure that they're still making these, but they're still available on eBay:

    All have rubber soles.

I prefer plain oxfords. If cost is an issue consider Clarks. They're a fine walking shoe, comfortable for all day on your feet (I'm a bartender who regularly works doubles, so I can certify this personally) and won't break the bank. Likely cheaper than Dr. Martens.

As others have said, ditch the idea of calf socks and go for actual hose. The "colored kilt hose" from USA Kilts holds up fine and looks great. I've got a pair that's near 3 years old and looks like new. They run about $23US a pair.

I definitely agree that you will do better with some real kilt hose. Clarks are good, durable, affordable shoes. I went out tonight in my kilt and wore a pair of Clarks brogues, along with kilt hose from What Price Glory. ($16) http://onlinemilitaria.net/products/...aki-Full-Hose/

Another potential resource is to visit a shoe repair place and see what shoes they have fixed that were never picked up. Most shops have some pairs--and one might just fit you. Such shoes are usually available for the cost of the repair, which is much less than a new pair of shoes.

    Good luck!

Wait 'til you get the kilt hose and then wear them when you go shoe-shopping. Hose are usually thicker than "normal" socks.
