In Victorian times it was common for Scots to wear the same jacket with the kilt that they would wear with trousers.

Due to the fashion of jackets at that time, cut so to button near the top and sweep open in an inverted V, the sporran wasn't hidden like it is with modern Saxon jackets.

That cover photo is a perfect example of how not to put together an outfit.

What's above the waist is completely non-integrated with what's below the waist, almost as if the photo pieced together.

Well theoretically, I cannot disagree with you. Nevertheless the gentleman's attire choices(Estate tweed I wonder?) and the like, although not all that common, would not raise an eyebrow in the rural Highlands.
