Some of you may not be familiar with why "shooting socks" are slightly longer than kilt hose and yes, they are in fact worn for shooting. With the modern version of shooting breeks they are cut narrower and slightly shorter than the traditional plus 4's/6's so the extra length of hose is required and in consequence the hose manufactures take the opportunity to add a bit of colour to the hose tops. For the plus 4's the hose top is not seen so the slightly shorter hose length is traditional and the extra expense of fancy hose tops are not required. As I wear plus 4's that extra length and extra expense is not required, however, both styles of hose are worn with the kilt quite happily.

Jock, do retailers usually distinguish between shooting socks based on the intended length of breeks or do you have to just keep looking until you find the right length?

I answer your question with a "health warning".

I don't wear breeks for shooting, I wear plus 4's, so in truth I am not sure what the chaps with breeks do. Cheviot hose work perfectly for me in every way with plus 4's and the kilt. I suppose it varies from person to person a bit, but I think(??) that the cheviot hose would be OK for me with breeks, but could perhaps be a tad short for comfort. From what I can gather from what I see and hear on this website and from what I observe -------and here comes the "health warning"---------- if it says shooting socks on the label, then it seems that they are a wee tad longer than kilt hose.

If you like the look of Shooting socks may I suggest you take a look at the offerings of one of our advertisers.

House of Cheviot. Their ad is on the lower banner.

I wrote this before I'd worn the pair of HoC hose I'd just acquired. I'm afraid I'm ruined for good on all hose except HoC hose. It really is worth the price. Who knew socks were so complicated!

Taking this message to heart, I'm saving up for Rannoch in Red and Mustard and Clansman Argyle in Ancient Scott. If I ever need to get really fancy, I'll go for the red & white diced. It'd be really nice if I could find someone selling the older style from HoC where they're self-coloured with Argyle tops (like Glen is wearing in one of this "1 kilt 10 looks" photos). I like the toned-down look of those - self-coloured but with a bit of panache as well.

No go. The Welsh feed store doesn't carry those any more, despite them being on the website.

Bah. Can only find the Ancient Scott tops in size Small and I need Medium. Plenty of National Scott and Hunting Scott, though.
