I hope some of the members near you get a kilt night (or several) together. From other posts, and personal experiences with kilted members, fun can be shared.
I've been to a kilt night when I lived in Kentucky. It was quite fun to meet like minded men who enjoy kilts.
I don't own any traditional kilts, as I cannot l afford them and all the accessories for them.
There are ways to purchase traditional kilts and accessories for a much lower-than average price. I've purchased some of my clothes ex-hire and some used on eBay.

You probably want to wear something that you feel comfortable with.
If you ever find yourself wanting a more traditional look, there are hundreds of "fashion" or "universal" tartans which don't have a clan affiliation. Some of them don't even have a distinctly Scottish affiliation. (For example, there's an American Heritage tartan and a German Heritage tartan.)
