    What is a ‘Lauder’ axe

I bought this kilt pin. It was very inexpensive (and looks it, rather). It is described as a ‘Lauder Axe’. Lots of places seem to offer kilt pins in this design. But, what is a Lauder’ axe? I’ve looked to find a refererence on-line but only come up with kilt pins. One obvious answer is that it’s like a Lochaber Axe but from Lauder!

I have no idea about a Lauder axe, but one thing is for certain sure the axe in the picture is not a Lochaber axe.

Yes, there are lots of differences not least Lauder axes are only 4” long (and only found on kilt pins)! (It seems)

    So it seems.

I did spot a small silver Lochaber axe kilt pin not so long ago being worn by one of my friends grandsons. I thought it looked pretty good and apparently it came from a renowned Edinburgh silversmith.

First name, "Ian"? Just checking because I didn't want to take it for granted.

This looks more like it came out a Christmas cracker, albeit a fairly classy cracker. I’m not really knocking it, it cost less than £2! It’s OK for what it is. I thought that if I ever got a kilt in Maclean of Duart it would be an appropriate ornament but I don’t know if I would ever wear this one.

I found a reference to a battle axe dug up near Lauder. However, that would seem to be a stone-age axe head so nothing like this.

Maybe I should pinch this from my wife’s jewellery box.

It’s not a Lauder axe, though; it’s at least an inch longer.
