    Shirts and sporrans question.

I know it's a weird combination to ask about, but I figured that I could cover both in one post.

First is, I rarely see black shirts being worn with kilts. Am I just not seeing them because they aren't normally worn or are they just not worn with kilts?

I am also wondering what classifies a sporran as a day sporran and not formal. I do understand that the ones with the metal cantles are for formal or evening wear. What else defines them as being formal/evening sporrans?

Black shirts go well with a kilt with black in the tartan.

Can’t speak to black shirts. I just don’t wear them kilted or otherwise.

For sporrans the modern convention is metal and fur for evening and leather for day.

However that’s not an absolute rule. Some members wear leather sporrans with metal cantles for day or evening. Some don’t like fur, some just have amazing leather sporrans that work for any occasion (like the custom jobs with the old MoD brass cantors). Jock Scot likes a plain black flap sporran for most evening events and it looks fine.

We need to be specific on metals. There's a big difference between a brass cantle daywear sporran and a silver cantle evening sporran.

Ok so brass is a daytime metal and chrome/silver is night time or evening as well as formal?

I think figheadair and mcmurdo wear brown leather sporrans with the brass MoD cantles with evening dress. They can chime in though to clarify if I’m mistaken.

I’m just saying the “rules” are flexible depending on the wearer’s taste.

There's nothing wrong with wearing a black shirt with a kilt. The Islay {Scotland} pipe band and world class piper Ian Spiers all wear black shirts.

Yessir. I don’t know the details but they made reproduction functional cantles at some point (I saw 50s mentioned) and several members here have had sporrans built from them. Very sharp looking.

Here’s an example I pulled from google:

I have 2 sporrans with MoD cantles and brown bags, one was made by Artificer and the other was a family heirloom that was handed down to me, I have never worn either for formal wear. I would not be apposed to it but as yet I have been content with either my sealskin or horsehair sporrans for evening wear.
