leather strap with dress sporran
I know that leather straps without chains are popular for day sporrans among the rabble.
Who here wears one with a dress sporran as well? Or do most go with the chain for the extra bling?

Honestly, I find the chains, especially the chromed ones to be rather garish.
A well polished leather belt shows an attention to detail, where a chromed chain just means you threw money at looking good.

I have a really nice chain that I wear only for the dressiest occasions. Otherwise, it's a strap.

Hey cousin...Gillis and Macdonald here too. Don't own a chain. Always a leather strap. I love my kilts!

I wear a leather strap with all my sporrans, in all situations.
That might change when/if I make or acquire a really nice, actual silver chain. The chrome one I have is flashy, but looks roughly put together and the quality of materials is pretty low.

...which brings up the other thing to mention: If you do use a strap (and I often do) make sure it's good quality: no rough edges on either the leather or the buckle, high quality dye that won't come out on your kilt, and a really, really smooth back on the leather. Saving $5 on a strap to ruin an expensive kilt is foolish economics.

The plaited leather straps are a nice touch. I am just getting into making some of these, having seen Nomad's. As well as looking good, they are also round and so ride nicely across the cilt fabric. In essence, they simply take the place of the chain; the strap and buckle to the rear remain the same.

I am a larger guy so I normally wear a sporran from belt loops rather than a leather strap, but for more formal occasions I have a chain that I use.
