    Greetings!

    Hello all!

I am a new forum member, and am introducing myself. I stumbled upon this forum while researching Highland dress, and am excited to be a part of it.

I am a long time kilt wearer, and am in the market for a new one. My first kilt is in the Macdonald of Glencoe/MacIan tartan, Modern. My family hails back to that branch of the Macdonalds, and the progenitor of our family in America survived the Massacre, grew to adulthood in, and emigrated to the Americas in the 1730s.

While I am aware of the dubious claims that the Macdonald of Glencoe tartan is "authentic", and bases its claims of authenticity on the Sobieski Stuarts, I rather like the tartan, and also rather enjoy all of the notoriety that surrounds the Vestiarium Scoticum. I am leaning toward Macdonald of the Isles Hunting Weathered for my next kilt. It will be a "casual" kilt, that I plan to wear in the place of plain old khaki pants or shorts. Interestingly, this is another sett "set" forth in the VS! While I agree that anyone can and should be able to wear whatever tartan one wishes, I personally want to be able to make some claim or rationale for what I wear, beyond "It look good."

I look forward to learning and sharing here!

    Tom

    Welcome!

    Hi Tom,

That sure is neat to read about the genesis of you family and this history that you know. I'm in the process (which never seems to end) of learning more about my geneaology and I'm wondering if you have any tips for bridging the gap between records in America and records in other countries?

Welcome to the Forum and please do share the new kilt when it is acquired!

I am a lazy geneaologist... All of the heavy lifting was done by a dear old aunt who has since passed away. But not before she self published a book which is essentially our family tree. Riveting readinG it is not, I must say. But quite the gift, to know where one comes from and who one’s people are!
