    Burns cousin, humor

Robert Burns had a cousin named Cole in Ireland. Correspondence between the two has recently been discovered.

    “To Robert Burns
    From Cousin Cole, Limerick, Ireland

Thank you for sending your volume. I am reading it constantly. You have inspired me to make my own attempts at poetry. Some examples are herewith.

Each night I write late in my nook
I’m inspired by your poetry book.
    As I follow my muse
    I hope you’ll excuse
Liberties with your words that I took.

    Auld Lang Syne
Auld acquaintance may soon be forgot
My memory’s not so very hot.
    I may just recall
    Your name after all
But then again, I just might not.

    Tam O’ Shanter
Riding home after drinking much ale
In the kirkyard Tam met ghosties so pale
    One young witch took affright
And gave chase in the night
And tore off Tam’s poor horse’s tail.

    To A Wee Mousie
    You timorous, cowering rat!
‘Midst my oats and my cheeses you shat.
    But my terrier, Jack
Made of you a quick snack
Ending “Best laid plans” and all that!

    Affectionately,
    Cole Burns”
