Hello from Queensland
Hi there,
By way of an intro, I have joined this forum to see if the vast knowledge of the members of this group is able to shed some light on an a photo of my great-grandfather. I was born in Paisley, Glasgow and my family emigrated to NZ when I was 5 and up until that point all but a few of my direct family lived in Glasgow going back as many generations as I can discover.
So if it is more appropriate to put this post up In a different topic, please let me know.
So, the attached photo (hopefully if I have done it correctly) is of a pipe band my great-grandfather was a member of somewhere between 1910-1920 (I think). It is either taken in Glasgow pre-1911 or in Canada post-1911 and could possibly be related to the 48th Highlanders Regiment as he was drafted to them in 1917. I have scoured the internet looking at photos of pipe bands, military bands and pictures of sporons trying to find anything that looks similar. In doing this, I have come to realise I have missed out on a significant part of my heritage as I have never worn let alone owned a kilt and there is so much tradition and detail involved in all of this.
What I have seen as apparently unique about the uniform being worn is that the sporon has 6 short black tassles which seem to be very uncommon. Anyway, as I know nothing about kilts, sporons or anything else in relation to this stuff, I will leave it with the photo and hope at this might be interest to any historian minded folk on here.
Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.
Cliff
