    G. Washington letter

Nothing to do with kilts but I thought some of you might be interested in the attempt of one G. Washington to get hold of some Scottish farmers to replace the "slovenly farmers of this country" on his estates.

I dont know if its the same letter, but my GrandFather used to talk of an American President in times past trying to recruit Scottish farmers------as opposed to crofters----- and there is a real distinction.

Speaking as a farmer, the history of farming in Scotland in the more suitable farming areas have a proud reputation of innovation and agricultural skills that was in the past and still is, second to none. So I can quite see the sense of someone of influence in a young and developing Country exploring the possibilities of recruiting much needed skills in food production from outwith its bounderies.
