Tweed kilt suit.

As there is some interest here in tweed kilt attire I thought that some of you might like to see this. As seen by me, on display at the Blair Atholl horse show 2019.

That's a nice pattern for a tweed kilt & jacket combination, and the waistcoat colour pairs well with it. But that sporran!

I like the tweed. The sporran, however, does sort of look like somebody shot Bugs Bunny. I'm really liking the tweed kilt that Barb made for me. It has kind of a different vibe and feel than my tartan kilts have. Comfortable and maybe a bit relaxed, but still pretty classy looking.

I can’t say I’m a fan of the sporrans that look like they were made out of a muppet.

It's a bit "twinset and pearls" for me. The tweed is nice though

Yes Todd's sporran there is much more in keeping with the tweed ethos.

That tweed outfit Jock spotted is lovely, but it seems to be paired with not only that uber-fuzzy gleaming white sporran but also equally gleaming white hose.

As we know the traditional civilian Highland Dress as it formed in the early 20th century had clearly defined categories of Day Dress and Evening Dress; tweed was for Day and would be worn with brown leather sporrans (often with fur fronts) while all-fur sporrans with silver cantles were for Eve.

Now everything changes if we venture into historical Highland Dress, because in Victorian times long hair sporrans were worn equally for Day and Evening. But sporrans like that gleaming white & silver one didn't exist in Victorian times which is why it jumps out to my eye as out-of-place.

In my opinion Highland Dress looks best when people use combinations of things that are traditionally (or historically) plausible.

So starting c1910 tweed would be worn with brown leather sporrans, which still looks most suitable to me (I wouldn't mind if that red tie were to go)



but go back in time and tweed was worn with long hair sporrans, most often of brown-grey hair (here in the late 19th century)



or animal-mask sporrans which have long been considered suitable for tweed (here in the mid-19th century)



Now not in full tweed suits, but these pipers favour white long hair sporrans with their tweed. I'm guessing that each man only owned one sporran and it had to serve all occasions.
