    what hat is this?

I don't recall seeing a hat like this before, with Highland dress or not with Highland dress.

The hose are the classic Victorian overcheck hose that seem to be making a comeback now.

In The Highlanders Of Scotland we can see that these hose were grey or taupe with blue and/or red overchecks.

Looks like a standard deerstalker hat to me, perhaps with a short brim like the chap on the right. But the brim is at an angle straight-on with the camera. The big smudge on the photo is obscuring half of the hat, though.

    Oh, that's a smudge.

I thought his hat was pointed on top!

Fooled me too. Thought it was a pointy hat.

It looked like a pointy hat to me, too.

The traditional hat of Kazakhstan, the kalpak, is often pointy with an upturned, flappy brim, much like the one in the photo. However, it is usually covered with embroidery in a strongly contrasting color, most commonly black patterns on a white hat.

There are also some pretty pointy Alpine/Tyrolean hats from rural parts of Austria that look a bit like the photo.

I thought the Alpine might be a possibility. But the smudge seems even more likely.
