    I know it's not a very patriotic opinion to have but my father, who had thorough knowledge of British and US history, maintained that in the long run we would have been better off had we not fought and won our revolution.

    "The Civil War is the price we paid for winning our independence" he would say. And a monstrous price it was! Our country continues to pay it.
