    I have recently learnt that the photo on the right of the OP may show William MacKenzie and not John Ban MacKenzie. WMcK was ex-42nd and the recipient of the Waterloo Medal which can be seen in the photo, whereas John Ban was never in the army.

    If correct, then the National Galleries' information is incorrect.
    John Ban MacKenzie, Piper to the Marquis of Breadalbane and the Highland Society.
