    Antique Buttons

I recently picked up these rather fine silver buttons with intertwined mythical beasts. Made by Brook & Sons, Edinburgh 1910. Considering getting them copied so that I have enough for a doublet.

    Peter,
Wonderful find, they are extremely nice and will undoubtedly look quite stunning on a doublet. I have some elaborate cut steel buttons that belonged to one of my great-grandfathers/grand-uncles from their court dress. They been repurposed and mounted on a beautiful black velvet Balmoral style doublet when I inherited them. I had tried to find matching ones (Ede & Ravenscroft) and in the end had copies made in sterling silver by a friend who is a jeweller. It was actually less expensive than purchasing identical cut steel buttons.

The ones shown on the left are the copies and the originals on the right. I did have extras of the small ones cast for a waistcoat and matching cuff-links.

Both those buttons are awesome. I hope to someday get to that level of kilting. Right now, I'm still at the casual and daywear stage.

They appear to be the beast called each uisge ("eck oosh-kuh") in Gaelic and "dragon" or "sea serpent" in English.

They vary from looking doglike, to birdlike, to fishlike. Peter's do look more fishlike to me.

They're very common on Highland ornaments, even today many sporran cantles and bagpipe engraving patterns feature them.

    Here's my sporran

    Here are other vintage sporrans

Here's a piper's set I used to have (I sold it to a piper in the Highlands several years ago)

    Here's a vintage bagpipe mount.

They're seen in The Book Of Kells.

I haven’t posted here in a long time but often come on to read the threads. Here is a picture of the Zoomorphic pattern silver mounts on my solo bagpipes.
