Happy National Tartan Day (U.S). The one day a year we recognize all that Scots have done to make the United States a great nation.
(Other groups get a whole month, but don't get me started on that).

April is Scottish-American Heritage Month - don't ask me who decided.

Let's try not to be parochial. Tartan Day is not just an American holiday. Canada, marks it too, and I believe that several other nations may do so as well.

On October 21, 2010, the Minister of Canadian Heritage officially declared April 6 as Tartan Day. We celebrate on that date because it is the anniversary of the signing of Declaration of Arbroath, the Scottish declaration.

Father Bill - I can't speak to Mr. Marshall's post specifically, but I don't think that he was trying to exclude Canada, simply pointing out that April 6 is the day that the US recognizes Tartan Day. Australia, for instance, celebrates it on July 1.

CT, thanks! Only April 4th is officially recognized by a US Senate resolution (and sometimes a Presidential and Gubernatorial pronouncement). There is nothing "official" making the month recognized, and for that matter even April 6th isn't an official holiday since it was never voted on by both houses and signed by the president.

Father Bill, not trying to exclude anyone but I knew that some used a different date. Just saying that today is the day we celebrate in the US. Since Canada shares this date, wear your tartan with pride.

The Act of Proscription was made law in 1746 but came into effect the following year. It did not ban tartan but the wearing of Highland Clothes by some Men and Boys.
