    New kilt! Bad photo!

So this arrived today. It's an 8-yd in 'The Skirl' tartan from the Mediumweight Hebridean Tartans range by House of Edgar. Made for me by Lynne Ward of Ward Kilts/Tartan Couture.

This is actually the first made to measure tartan kilt I have ever owned. I've had two 'off the rack' in Royal Stewart (total crap- long gone, but it was my first) and one off the rack in Saffron, but the rest have been either been tweed or Utilikilts/utility style.

So While I was going more traditional this time, I still wanted it to be a quirky. Some of the features:

-Three straps in different leather - brown, grey, and blue, and straps attached with grey wool.
-Binding in grey wool and the fringe is grey and what I would call dusty pink.

As for the selfie, well I really did my back in yesterday and could not be asked to try and put together a decent outfit- but I would greatly value any thoughts or suggestions for what you think might go well with it.

Lynne was a pleasure to work with and she turned out a lovely product.

    Better pics of the kilt

Here are some much better pictures of the kilt lifted from Lynne's FB page. It really is rather lovely.

    Beautiful tartan!

I liked that entire Hebridean Range when I saw the swatches.

I like it. I really like it a LOT.

You may have just sold me on the Hebridean line. Been on the fence about it because it's not officially registered. But I really do like it. I think you helped me decide.

I saw photo of this kilt on Lynne's page, and was immediately impressed. Did you pick all the details yourself, or collaborate with Lynne?

Can I ask how much those customizations set you back? I really love the contrasting waist band and fringe.

My last kilt from her ran about $350 using Marton Mills and custom brown straps.

I had clocked your comment on Lynne’s page and it added some fun for the ‘unveiling’ here.

As for the details, in the end, they were a collaboration, but it took some time to get there. When I first approached her, she really didn’t want to do anything outside strict traditional, but eventually I talked her into it and then I think she started to enjoy it. I gave her my wish list, which included mis-matched kilt straps, contrast binding and fringe, and flip-out pockets on the waistband. The pocket thing was a bridge too far for her, so in the end she is providing me with the left over fabric and I will have them made by a friend. Once we agreed on the concept, I pretty much went with her instincts on colours, and I’m very happy how it turned out.

There was a small extra charge for the additional wool for fringe/binding, and maybe for the straps, but it wasn’t a lot.

I’ve decided that my next kilt (assuming he will work with me) will be with Paul Henry. He clearly loves coming up with interesting and fun details, and he’s a damn fine fellow to boot. But after adding five kits in six months (to be fair, two of them were eBay surprises), I need to take a break or my wife will kill me.

I’m targeting the new year and collecting my thoughts until then.

I had no idea the range wasn’t registered- I don’t think it bothers me.

All I can say is that I loved it in the pictures, but it’s even more lovely in person. I’m really all around pleased with it. This Skirl tartan in particular is, for me, the perfect combination of ‘loud’ and ‘subtle’. It just really works.
