Mess Dress vs Evening Mess Dress
As far as the US Army goes
DA Pam 670-1 is the reference.
The differentiation between the Mess Dress and Evening Mess Dress is the first (Mess Dress) is “Black Tie” whilst the Evening Dress is “White Tie”. The evening dress substitutes the black cummerbund, tux shirt, and black tie for a white vest, , a “high-wing” collared smooth stiff front shirt, and white tie. While there are very few “white tie” formal occasions these days, they pop up from time to time.
