    Question Sporran ID/information?

    Hi all,

A few years ago when I purchased my first kilt, my dad sent me this sporran that he owned, whose provenance is unknown to me. According to him, the hair is horse and the leather is American bison. There is no maker's mark. The toggle seems to be carved bone, but I could be wrong. Any ideas from The Rabble?

I would think a US hobbyist or craft-maker.

Also that it could have been intended to be a belt bag other than/as well as a sporran. (Though having the three tassels makes it sporranlike.)

I see quite a few things sort of like that here, people who make pouches that can be worn by the Rendezvous people or worn with kilts.

For example these bags on Ebay now

I think you're right, Richard—the size and shape of the belt strap and lack of D-rings suggests to me that it was not designed with the intention to be worn on a sporran chain. I had never heard of Rendezvous, but after some cursory research would believe there could be a great deal of overlap in craftspeople producing goods for that as well as Highland gear in varying degrees of historical authenticity.
