    Olympics

So, GB managed eventually to get a Gold and a Silver at the Olympics in the curling but did you know that
    - all 10 GB competitors are Scots (but we're not allowed to have a Scottish team )
    - Eve Muirhead, Captain of the Gold winning women's team is an excellent piper

    Olympics

    That of course is correct.

But by the same token, if all competitors in a particular event were English 'they would not be permitted to have an English team' either. The same applies to Wales and Northern Ireland.
This matter was often discussed in the past when football (soccer) was in the Olympics and amateur football flourished. The team represented Great Britain; there was no representation of the constituent countries as such.
On the other hand, there was discussion of fielding a Great Britain team at the World Cup decades ago but that was not possible as FIFA only permitted its constituent associations to field teams, and in this case England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland had, and have, their own particular governing bodies.
It is quite likely that the ICC (International Cricket Conference) may apply for cricket to be reinstated in the Olympics, as it was long ago when France were defeated in the final (!!!) If that transpired the team would represent Great Britain, as it currently is, and England would not be permitted to have its own team!

On the original subject, congratulations to Eve Muirhead - a crowning achievement for her career!

Presumably Eve will now be rewarded with a higher order than her MBE.

And 17 years old Kirsty Muir from here in Aberdeen came fifth in the Big Air skiing.

I would hope she would be made a Dame, like Katherine Grainger was, given the years of competition, the setbacks and the eventual triumph. In fact, anyone (I assume a British citizen) can make a recommendation. Over to you, Neloon, and others - send the stone towards the house!

Correct me if I’m wrong but does GB (Great Britain) not just comprise England, Wales & Scotland. Well done to the curlers for winning Uk’s only medals.

As I understand it, while technically Great Britain is England, Scotland, and Wales, Team GB in the Olympics includes Northern Ireland. As in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

She has indeed been awarded an OBE and the other girls in the team are made MBE

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the British honours system may or may not be, it is absolutely right that these wonderful people’s efforts have been recognised and they have. Well done them.
