Advice wanted for hand weaving tartan for dancer and piper kilts

Hello. I'm looking for any resources or information I can find on weaving kilt material. Specifically the difference in weights for dancers and pipers. My family is very involved in the Scottish community and do both Highland dance and Pipe band. One of my long time dreams has been to weave tartan fabric to make new outfits. I've done a good amount of searching online but the majority of tartan weaving resources I could find were for things like blankets and scarves and have different yarn requirements. What size yarn and sett should I be using? I'm sure I'll be back once completed for help with the actual sewing of the kilt but I'm not there yet. Thank you very much for your help!
