Billy is, perhaps for some, overdone to begin with; however he is wearing the fly at this years parade, and wore it previous at the 2019 parade, so it worked for him…

He of course grew up at a time and place when and where anyone wearing a kilt was a source jest and parody. I can’t recall ever seeing him in a kilt until he bought his estate in Aberdeenshire.
Noting his flamboyant nature, it is perhaps no surprise that he opted to use 21st Century Kilts for this outfit.

I am afraid Sir Billy’s picture used as an example here in this thread,is a classic example of an internet picture, without knowledge of the situation as a whole, can lead one to draw inaccurate conclusions.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that these combinations of matching tartan kilt, waistcoat, and jacket look far more like a lady's church outfit in the U.S. than anything resembling proper kilt attire.
I was actually supposed to wear a fly plaid this past Sunday, for a wedding, because I was the best man and we were told to. The groomsman, who for reasons unknown never opened his box from the hire shop until the morning of the ceremony, didn't receive one so the groom went with his and I had to give mine up. I was indifferent regarding the look, but a bit irritated that I had spent the money on a vintage brooch that I can't imagine I'll ever have occasion to wear again as I don't see wearing a plaid for anything else. The plaid will probably end up draped over a sword over the fireplace or something equally decorative.
Any helpful recommendations on where the brooch might come in handy?

Depending on what the brooch looks like, maybe a kilt pin? I've worn a brooch as a kilt pin before.

But their coat tartans and kilt/plaid tartans don't match.

These outfits were of course made to be worn in a range of environments and circumstances, not least; for battle. Having studied all the known surviving examples, they were beautifully tailored. Similarly, the surviving Highland Revival outfits. The 21st Century outfits are nothing like the older pieces, Sir Billy's looks ill-fitting parody by comparison.

Very interesting observations Peter. I had always imagined that the rank and file of BPC’ s army were not clad in uniform as such and perhaps the Clan Chiefs and Officers would have been rather better clad than the rest of that army. Perhaps I have assumed incorrectly?
If my assumptions are somewhere near right then, I doubt that there is much of the rank and file attire remaining? So, the attire that you have studied would belong to the rather better off? Due to the better tailoring of the more well off and therefore will be the bits that you have studied?
