We called it several things but Handfasting is correct. I called it wrapping because that is what you do. It is the wedding ceremony as it existed in historical scotland. We did it as a renewal of the vows. Up until the victorian era it needed no official present. We had my eldest son perform the handfasting around our wrists and hands while we each made a statement of our love to each other. My son John and his wife Christian researched the historical way to do it. As we made our statements he would wrap it around our clasped hands and then each child also made a statement of love for us and their siblings and a small ribbbon was tied onto the wrap itself. The wrap is made of tartan ribbons and rope (it is really quite beautiful).

We wore McKenzie and Anderson. My grandson Toby really loved the kilt (probably because he loves being naked)

My children who could attend. Yea it's weird that the same genes produced Julie and Cameron (they were all big babies 8.6 being the smallest but Cameron, who was last was also the largest at 10.8) Julie and Guen are the same height but Julie was wearing heels. Cameron went traditional barefoot

Ah yes, handfasting! I am with you now. Do you know, I have been to countless weddings in Scotland of all denominations, creeds and variations of belief and none in a fairly long life, but I have never seen it done!

My guess is once the law required people to have clergy or government official officiate it gradually went out of fashion particularly with clergy. Of course I have only been twice and also didn't see any kilts except a guy with a bagpipe on a street corner.
From the number of ties available on etsy it would seem to be making some sort of a come back and we did our bit. I did find it very moving.
Afterwards we had rock throwing, archery and axe throwing.
