Love the picture. I noticed how high up his kilt is. Certainly no pants waist for him.

I well remember this picture( pre WW1 probably) being discussed on this website too many years ago to remember.
I have a certain amount of experience with horses and blacksmiths and I think he is out of the picture , but his box of impedimenta is plainly seen. I think the lad holding the pony is probably a stable lad as all the blacksmiths I have ever known, even today, ————. my wife has today had a couple of ponies re-shod and part of the blacksmiths “ uniform”
is still a hefty, spark proof leather apron hanging from their neck and fastened around the waist.

And is still the traditional way to wear the kilt here.

As Jock said, the pic has been posted before.

I recall the consensus being that it was posed. As mentioned, no leather apron. A blacksmith - or farrier either - wouldn't to be wearing a long hair sporran or argyle hose. And finally, what is he going to do to that poor horse with that 8 lb. sledge?

Regardless, I still think it's a great pic.

That was my first thought. I have had horses for many decades and cleaned my share of hooves, as well as sat with the farrier while he did his work. One would be a fool to do it whilst wearing a hair sporran!

Having had horses in the past and working on the farm, I have to agree 100%.
